Coarse grits are used for shaping and reducing the length of acrylic or hard gel enhancements. Medium grits (150–180 grit) are the most versatile, used for shaping natural nails, light surface filing of gel, and refining the free edge. Fine grits (220 grit and above) are used for finishing and smoothing before polish application.

Using too coarse a grit on natural nails or gel causes heat damage and excessive thinning of the nail plate. Always match the grit to the task, coarse for enhancement reduction, medium for shaping, fine for finishing.
