How to Transition Your Gel Nails from Winter to Spring

Spring is the season of fresh starts, and your nails are the easiest place to begin. If you've
been rocking dark winter shades since May, this guide will help you refresh your gel
manicure, protect your natural nails, and pick colours that suit the new season.

Why a nail "reset" matters
Gel polish is brilliant for long wear, but your natural nails still need care between
manicures. Moving into a new season is a good reminder to give them a little attention so
your next set looks better and lasts longer.

Step 1: Remove your winter gel properly
The golden rule is never peel or pick your gel off. When you peel, you pull away the top
layers of your natural nail along with the polish, which leaves nails thin and weak.

Instead:
- Gently file the shiny top layer to break the seal.
- Soak cotton pads in acetone and place one on each nail.
- Wrap each fingertip in foil and wait 10–15 minutes.
- Gently slide the softened gel away with a cuticle pusher.

Not comfortable doing this at home? A salon visit is always a great option.

Step 2: Give your nails a mini-break and some care
Once the gel is off, wash your hands, then apply cuticle oil to your nails and surrounding
skin. A little daily oil for a week keeps your cuticles soft and your nails looking healthy
before your next manicure.

Step 3: Prep like a pro
Preparation is what makes a manicure last. Lightly buff your nails, push back your cuticles,
and wipe each nail with a lint-free wipe to remove dust and oils. A good base coat then gives your colour something to cling to.

Step 4: Pick your spring colours
Spring colours tend to be softer and lighter than winter shades. Here are a few directions to
try:
- Soft neutrals: Milky nudes and creamy beiges go with everything.
- Pastels: Baby pink, lilac and mint feel fresh without being overwhelming.
- Sheer pinks: A natural, "your nails but better" look.
- A pop of colour: Brighter shades for accent nails if you want some fun.

Quick spring nail tips
- Use a thin coat of colour, then a second. Thin coats cure better and last longer.
- Cap the free edge (the tip of your nail) with every coat to prevent chipping.
- Moisturise your hands daily, just keep it off the nail until after your manicure.
