How to get a mirror-shine finish with every top coat

A high-gloss finish is one of the first things a client notices about a new set, often before they've even registered the colour. It's also one of the easiest steps to get technically right and still end up with a dull result, because the issue usually isn't the product, it's the wipe.

What Actually Creates the Shine

A traditional top coat like Top It Off cures with a tacky inhibition layer on the surface, which needs to be removed with a cleanser-soaked pad to reveal full gloss underneath. The shine has been there the whole time, sealed under that layer. Wiping is what uncovers it.

Where Technique Goes Wrong

The instinct with a stubborn-feeling tacky layer is to keep wiping, back and forth, adding pressure. This is precisely what dulls the finish. Repeated wiping drags across a surface that's still slightly soft immediately after cure, creating micro-scratches that scatter light instead of reflecting it cleanly. One confident, single-direction pass with a clean, lint-free pad is almost always enough.

The Sealed Edge Matters Too

Shine aside, failing to cap the free edge with top coat is one of the most common causes of early chipping. A thin ribbon of top coat swept along and under the free edge seals the layers beneath it and protects the point of the nail that takes the most daily impact.

Why This Step Gets Rushed

Top coat is usually the fastest step in a service, which makes it the easiest one to treat as an afterthought. But it's also the layer a client's eye goes to first, and the layer most exposed to daily wear. Slowing down for this one step, correct cure time, single wipe, sealed edge, has a disproportionate effect on how finished and durable the whole set looks.
